Modern data platforms are evolving fast, driven by advanced analytics, AI/ML, and increasing demands for scale, speed, and reliability. In response, many organisations focus heavily on choosing the right technologies, architectures, and tools, but in practice, technology is rarely the hardest part. In this talk, I'll argue that building a truly scalable data function is less about tools and more about structure, ownership, and clarity. As data platforms grow, it becomes critical to clearly define the multiple layers of the platform, what each layer is responsible for, and how those layers interact. Without this clarity, even the best architectures struggle under the weight of unclear ownership, duplicated work, and growing operational load. A modern data platform is more than a spaceship full of cutting-edge technology. It needs skilled astronauts, clear missions, and strong leadership, otherwise it never leaves the ground. This talk is for data engineers, analytics leaders, and anyone feeling that their data platform problems are more organisational than technical.
